For most players, an autograph consists of some careless squiggles. Not Rivera. He signed every card and ball with a black felt-tip pen, slowly inscribing each letter in his name with the care of a calligrapher.
When he finished, Rivera softly blew on his signature to dry the ink, then carefully tucked the finished product into an envelope.
"If you're going to do something, you should do it right," he said.
