Joe Torre must have recognized that Mariano Rivera needs more steady work, whether there is a save situation or not.
With the Yankees behind 10-6, Mo entered to pitch the bottom of the eighth. He looked very impressive. He struck out Delmon Young and Akinora Iwamura for the first two outs. Elijah Dukes hit a bouncer down the third base line that A-Rod got to but his Derek Jeter like jump throw didn't work and Dukes was credited with a base hit. He then retired Josh Paul on a bouncer up the middle to end the inning.
Rivera is now 1-2 on the season with 0 saves and 2 blown saves and he has an ERA of 7.11.
