Mariano collected a 5 out save, closing out a 10-3 victory over the White Sox. Now, I know that sounds kind of funny. We won by 7 runs. Yet, we used Mo and he got a save, on top of it.
The Yankees offense didn't erupt until the 9th. Entering the bottom of the 8th, the Yankees held an 8-1 lead. Farnsworth entered to face Luis Terrero, who flied out to left. Jerry Owens followed that with a single - advancing to second on a throwing error by Farnsworth. Tadahito Iguchi hit a ground rule double that scored Owens, making the score 4-2 with the tying run coming to the plate in Jim Thome.
This is when Torre elected to go to Mo. He proceeded to get Thome to ground to first for the second out with Iguchi advancing to third. Two outs. Paul Konerko singled next, however, scoring Iguchi to cut the Yankees' lead down to 1. Andy González pinch ran for Konerko with A.J. Pierzynski next up. No more damage would be done, however, as Pierzynski struck out swinging.
As I mentioned before, the Yankees offense erupted in the top of the 9th, scoring 6 runs, including an Alex Rodriguez grand slam. Even so, Mo remained in to pitch the bottom of the 9th and made quick work, retiring the side in order. Josh Fields struck out, Rob Mackowiak grounded out to A-Rod and Juan Uribe grounded to Cairo at first to end it.
So, Mo collects his 7th save of the season, taking his ERA down to 4.50. Mo's ERA in May and June is 1.25.
