Over the past week, there has been a handful of stories on or related to Mariano Rivera. Here are some highlights:

John Harper of the Daily News discusses Jonathan Papelbon's recent remarks of "coming up behind" Mo and "feel[ing] a certain obligation" to raise the contract bar for his fellow closers.

Rivera, as quietly dignified as he has been brilliant over the years, wasn't as judgmental yesterday.

"That's for him to talk about," he said of Papelbon. "I don't worry about what someone else says." ...

Rivera just chuckled softly at the notion that Papelbon seems to view himself as his successor.

"If that's the way he feels, more power to him," said Rivera. "He has a lot of talent. But that's a lot of ground to cover. I've seen a lot of ground."

Tyler Kepner writes in about Mo's willingness to help his teammates.

“To watch his demeanor and watch the way he handled it, every day he put ice on his shoulder and said: ‘I’m only human. Tomorrow, if the game’s close, I’m going to get the ball and do everything I can,’ ” Chamberlain said. “He’s won and lost some of the biggest games in the history of baseball, and he’s no worse for the wear when he gives up a home run. Some people think the world’s going to end.”

Kepner also shares a perhaps little known nugget: when asked if anyone had helped him when he first came up, the first name he mentioned? Steve Howe.

“Steve Howe was a good man,” Rivera said. “He always told me to work hard, do what you have to do, respect, stay away from all of those problems outside baseball, and all that. He really helped me.”

Joel Sherman profiles the one pitch wonder, praising his mental game.
