06/19: More on Rivera and Hoffman
Posted by: Patrick
Sean Brennan of the Daily News and Chris Jenkins of the San Diego Union-Tribune both have features on Trevor Hoffman and Mariano Rivera, which each pitcher talking about the other.
"We've never really crossed paths much," Hoffman said Wednesday. "The times that we have, you know, the World Series isn't a time for a lot of chit-chat. Otherwise, there just hasn't been a lot of opportunity. He's always been an American Leaguer, I've always been a National Leaguer. But I do know there's a lot of respect there." "There is, very much," Rivera said Wednesday. "But I do not know him." "I admire Trevor, the way he goes about his business. He respects the game and what baseball is all about. When you have a player like that who does his job, the same job I do, you appreciate it more." ...
"We're two totally different players," said Rivera, who picked up his 19th save of the season Wednesday night. "He relies on his breaking pitch, his off-speed stuff and I'm a power pitcher and yet we both have had success. That's what's amazing about it. He's tremendous in his ability."
