King Felix was mowing down the Yankees without a sweat. However, in the 4th inning there was a play at first in which the first basemen was called for interference as he was blocking the baserunner's path to first base. Hernandez got out of it, but was hit in the leg by Overbay as he was trying to cover first base and seemed to injure his leg or knee, but he remained in the game.
Seattle got an unearned run off Sabathia early and added two more on a home run from former Yankee Raul Ibanez. The Yankees scratched back to make it 3-1 as Overbay doubled high off the wall in right and the ball did not bounce into the stands and the runner from first scored on the play. In the seventh Eric Wedge went to the bullpen and the Yankees rallied against Charles Furbush with the big hit coming from Robinson Cano as he came threw with a two run double to tie the score at 3. Furbush kept struggling and the Yankees would take the lead on a sacrifice fly from Lyle Overbay. David Robertson struggled as he walked the leadoff batter in the 8th and then surrendered a single to put two runners on. He would strike out Michael Saunders and then pinch hitter Justin Smoak lined a ball up the middle but Jayson Nix had him played perfectly and he caught the ball and was able to race to the bag to double the runner up and end the inning. Rivera entered in the ninth and made quick work of the heart of the order. Seager flew out to center for the first out. Kendry Morales shattered his bat on the first pitch and would fly out to left for the second out. Michael Morse had three hits on the night but would get caught looking as Mo got a favorable call from the umpire. Rivera is 0-0 on the season with 16 saves in 16 save opportunities. His 2013 season ERA now stands at 1.56.
Mariano is now 15 for 15 on the season in save opportunities. On a Mother's Day Sunday in Kansas City Rivera converted his 15th consecutive save to start the 2013 season as the Yankees swept the Royals.
He now has 623 career saves. His record on the season is 0-0 and his 2013 season ERA now stands at 1.65. The Yankees were led by back to back home runs from Robinson Cano and Vernon Wells. Hiroki Kuroda worked a strong 7 and 2/3 innings and David Robertson got the last out of the eighth. Rivera entered in the ninth and Eric Hosmer singled. However, the first pitch to Salvador Perez was a tailor made bouncer to short which was turned into a double play. Mike Moustakas made the last out for the second day in a row as he flied to right to end the game.

Dave Skretta of the AP reports on Mariano Rivera's emotional meet and greet with Royals fans as he continues his farewell tour in Kansas City.
Bressette's family was returning to Overland Park., Kan., from a trip to Florida in March when a massive display board inside Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport in Alabama fell on Heather and three of her boys. Heather was injured along with 9-year-old Tyler and 5-year-old Sam, while 10-year-old Luke was killed in the accident.
''I was in tears seeing this family, the father breaking down and the wife crying,'' Rivera said afterward. ''This happened not too long ago.''

After David Waldstein of The New York Times reported on a brief, though heated from at least one end, exchange between Mariano Rivera and Joba Chamberlain, both say things are fine.
According to the report, Rivera was conducting an interview pregame and Chamberlain was "speaking loudly," so as to be heard above the public address system. Rivera could not hear the questions he was being asked, so he remarked to "Joba, suave" which, in Spanish, translates to "soft," and gestured his hands in a downward motion, to indicate a lowering of value. Chamberlain took exception and, following the interview, he approached Rivera in view of reports and fans. "Don't shush me," he said. Rivera thought that he was joking, but he persisted. "I'm serious. Don’t ever shush me," he's quoted as saying. "He's a good kid, man," Rivera said today. "He's a good kid. Sometimes we all say things that we don't mean to say. It's the way it is, and I keep it like that. That doesn't make me angry because something like that happened. I'm the oldest here. I have to be the brother that has to keep the cool. It's good. We're all good. It's nothing. We'll move on."

Andy Pettitte started off a little shaky but had a great sixth and seventh inning ending with 100 pitches and a 3-2 lead. The Yankees got the lead early when Royals third basemen Mike Moustakas threw wildly past first and allowed Chris Nelson to tie the game. KC would scratch to tie the game and would go ahead 2-1 on a home run from Billy Butler.
However, the Yankees got to Shields in the fifth as he got behind Vernon Wells 3-1 and Vernon unloaded a bomb to the back of the bullpen wall in left to give the Yankees the lead at 3-2. David Robertson was simply awesome as he struck out the side in the eighth inning. Rivera entered in the ninth and got Billy Butler to ground to short on the first pitch for one number one. Eric Hosmer hit the ball hard up the middle but Jason Nix had him played perfectly and threw him out easily for the second out. Salvador Perez the young Royals catcher from Venezuela went with an outside cutter and lined it to right just hitting the chalk for a double. Mike Moutsakas would be the last hope for Kansas City and he battled to 3-2 and drove the last pitch from Mo up the alley in left center but Vernon Wells was able to get to it and the game was over. The save for Rivera was his 14th in 14 save opportunities. His career save total is now at 622 for which he is the career leader. His record is still at 0-0 and his 2013 season ERA now stands at 1.76.

Daniel Barbarisi of The Wall Street Journal spoke to Mariano Rivera about his return to Kansas City, where he went down last year while shagging fly balls.
"I might go to the same spot where I landed, where I was," he said. "But I'm going to enjoy it. It's nothing to regret. Nothing to regret. I want to be there. I want to enjoy it. I want to see the doctor who took me to the hospital and say thank you. I want that."

CC Sabathia deserved a better fate. He gave up a run in the first and then retired the next eleven batters before the rain delayed the game for 1 hour and 59 minutes. The Yankees were leading 2-1 at the time but starting pitchers have to go five innings to qualify for the win.
When play resumed Adam Warren came in for the Yankees. He was followed by Boone Logan, Preston Claiborne, David Robertson and then "The Sandman". Robinson Cano would give the Yankees an insurance run with his 9th home run to make the score 3-1. Rivera got Rosario to pop up foul to third for the first out. Arenado flew out to left and then Mo got Jordan Pacheco to an 0-2 count and then hit him with an inside fast ball. Rutledge then grounded out to short to end the game. Rivera is 0-0 on the season with 13 saves and his season ERA now stands at 1.88.

David Phelps pitched six strong innings as only gave up two runs on a home run off the bat of Todd Helton. The Yankees jumped out to a 2-0 lead on two run home run from Vernon Wells in the first inning. Helton's home run came in the second to tie the score.
Phelps was relieved by Preston Claiborne who pitched a strong seventh inning as he kept the Rockies off the scoreboard. He was followed by David Robertson who struggled but got through the eighth leaving the potential go ahead run at second. In the top of the ninth Vernon Wells led off the inning by getting on. The Yankees tried the hit and run but Overbay did not swing at the pitch and Wells would have been out but the shortstop covering dropped the ball. Eventually the Yankees loaded the bases and Brennan Boesch hit a hard grounder to third which was fielded but Boesch beat the throw and the go ahead run scored to give the Yankees the lead at 3-2. Rivera entered for the bottom of the ninth and got Rutledge to fly to center for the first out. With Nunez not available and Chris Nelson pinch hit for, Vernon Wells was elected to play third for the first time in his career. Carlos Gonzales hit a grounder to third which Wells reached for and was able to throw out Gonzales for the second out. Cuddyer singled past Cano to right and then Rosario battled but Mo got him to fly to center to end the game. The save for Rivera is his 12th in 12 save opportunities. His record is 0-0 and his season ERA now stands at 2.03.

Phil Hughes was great through eighth innings and left with a 4-0 lead. The game was not in a save situation due to the 4 run lead so Shawn Kelley started the ninth. The first batter got a hit and Rivera was summoned although the game was still not in a save situation because the tying run was not on deck.
Rivera walked Moss and then got Donaldson to ground to short forcing Moss at second for the first out. Seth Smith singled to score a run and make the game 4-1. Josh Reddick then grounded out but the Yankees could not turn a double play and another run scored to make it 4-2. This run was charged to Rivera. Adam Rosales then flew out to right to end the game. The Yankees scored on home runs from Chris Stewart and Lyle Overbay and then added two more tack on runs to extend to a 4-0 lead. Rivera is 0-0 on the season with 11 saves in 11 save opportunities and his 2013 season ERA now stands at 2.19. |
